STATE INVESTIGATING CARE FACILITY’S DISPOSAL OF RECORDS

October 30, 2009- The Kansas Department of Aging is investigating Topeka’s Briarcliff Care Center after the facility dumped hundreds of patient records in a recycling bin. The records contained social security numbers and confidential treatment information. Upon discovering the records a local citizen informed the Topeka Police Department, and the Department of Aging was alerted. The investigation is ongoing and could result in fines and/or regulatory action against the center.
