LANCANSHIRE COUNTY (UK) COUNCIL DISCARDS PERSONAL INFORMATION
Guardian News and Media Ltd
20 Jan 2010

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has publicly scolded Lancashire County Council over social casework files, which were duplicates of those held by the county council and included extensive amounts of personal data, including ethnicity, religion and physical and mental health conditions of clients.  As a result, the agency is now being required to create written procedure for disposing of office equipment.

ICO decided not to serve the organization with an enforcement notice.  It will be interesting to see if the data protection authority is so generous after the 1 April imposition of a new maximum fine of £500,000.
